One of the best tools to bring back detail from dark and bright areas is the Shadows/Highlights adjustment (Under Image > Adjustment). Unfortunately, the Shadows/Highlights adjustment does not have a corresponding Adjustment Layer.
To apply the Shadows/Highlights non-destructively, convert the layer into a Smart Object first. Then apply the adjustment as you normally would.
