Thanks, Jesus! Very helpful. I like how you took the time to explain what each adjustment layer was for. Go Yanks!

You’re welcome, Daniel!
Go Yanks…first in the qualifiers, Gold Cup champs, and the longest winning streak ever. Not bad!
As always… another great tutorial with everything explained very well. I already look forward to your next video. Thanks Jesús!
Thank You, Gary!
Love the tutorial! I keep rewinding and learning!
The two mask layers you made towards the end of the tutorial… one having a black mask for lighten and the other black mask for darken… how is it that possible? Wouldn’t you need one black mask and one white mask and then change the color of your brush to the default black and white colors? Please explain the difference. I am interested in the non destructive part of the original photo.
Thank you!
Lisa, they are both curves adjustment layers. The curve in the brighten layer is set so it brightens the entire image, and the curve for the darken layer is set so it darkens the image. They both have layer masks set to black, which hide the adjustments. When you paint with white on either layer mask, it reveals the adjustments. Thus, when you paint with white on the “darken” mask, it makes those pixels darker, and when you paint with white on the lighten layer it makes those pixels brighter.
I use this same technique in other tutorials, for example on my Rock Text Tutorial. At about minute 16 I start talking about this same process, although I call the layers by different names.
Hope this helps! Thank You for watching and subscribing!
Thank you for the explanation.
So it looks like I just paint with white on the two separate black masks. Does it matter which curve adjustment layer (brighten or darken) with the black mask is on top layer wise?
Can you also tell me how I get the “retro action” into my action file?
Thanks again!
Lisa
Lisa,
Yes, you paint with white on the two separate black masks.
It doesn’t matter which is on top since most of the time the two masks won’t overlap (Overlap meaning: painting with white in the same area on both adjustment layers). However, overlapping adjustment layers will give you different results if you change their order.
I realize I can use this on any photo…but do you have this particular photo available for DL? (aside from right-clicking and saving from this post)
You can get it here
