In this tutorial, I will take you through the process of creating a long shadow effect. This could be done on a logo or text.

The long shadow effect is usually seen in “Flat Design” which is a style that removes any effect that gives three-dimensions to an illustration, such as gradients, textures and bevels.

Flat design focuses on a minimalist use of flat colors, and it is really popular in websites and mobile apps.

I will also show you how Smart Objects can help you in the creation of assets for mobile applications. The template that I used in the video can be downloaded below.

Note: A Smart Object is a container that can hold one or more layers. It allows you to apply editable adjustments, distortions, filters, and transformations.

If you have any questions or comments, leave in the comment section below.

    Hey,

I think I’m being silly here, but only at 3.37 and when I create a square shape and go to the properties panel, all I can see are mask type options – nothing for changing corner options like yours does in the video. What am I missing?

    Thanks!

      Claire,

      Are you in Photoshop CC?

I don’t think that feature was available in older versions.

On the options panel, when you created the rectangle, was it set to “Shape”? Not Pixels or path.

Also, where you see the mask options, in the Properties panel, there should be two icons on the top left. One for the mask, which is a square with a circle inside of it. Next to that you should see the icon for the Live Shape Options which is a Square with smaller squares on each corner. If you click on that one, then you should be able to make the adjustments.

Make sure that you are working with a shape layer with vectors though. You might want to create a new one just to be sure.

          Hope this helps!

Ooops, just realised that while I had PSD CC open, for some reason it was defaulting to CS6 and I was using the older version. Sorry! Thanks for all your help, I can see the right options now 🙂
